Gesso is applied to the surface to add texture. My technique for the sand effect, my signature brush - Debby's Texture brush for foliage and by adding simple washes of tints to bring life to the scene.  

The "Bokay" painting effect, often referred to as the "Bokeh" effect in photography, is achieved by creating a blurry, out-of-focus appearance in an image or painting. Bokeh refers to an absence of harsh or sharp characteristics. Many times, it is assumed that this applies only to the background of the image, but Bokeh can also apply to blurriness of the subject or foreground - anything in the image that appears out of focus.
